Sea freight vs. air freight paperwork

Sea freight shipments typically require a Bill of Lading and more detailed customs documentation, since they involve longer transit times and multiple ports. Air freight is faster but has stricter weight and item restrictions, with its own set of customs forms. Your moving company should tell you clearly which route fits your timeline and budget, and prepare the matching paperwork.

Timeline: how early to start

For international moves, start the documentation process at least 4-6 weeks before your move date. Sea freight in particular can take several weeks in transit on top of preparation time, so early planning avoids delays at either end.
